MBA and a PGDBA
Education

Difference between an MBA and a PGDBA. Which is better?

As a student or a working professional, you must have come across the term MBA, whereas a PGDBA might not be that commonly heard. Both these courses are interesting and value-adding in their own right, but there are some key differences that you must know about before you choose between the two. Both courses can be done through distance learning, viz, online.

A postgraduate Diploma in Business Administration (PGDBA) is a relatively new course that is being offered. It focuses on the analytical aspect of business administration. Meanwhile, an MBA course is a well-established course with a broad overview of the subject matter. Candidates can pursue the PD Diploma after completing any degree course, such as BBA, BBM, etc. PGDBA involves marketing management, Accounting for Managers, HR Management, International Business Environment, Business Policy and Environment, and Principles and Practice of Management. Meanwhile, the focus of an online MBA will be on Business Communication and Soft Skills, Financial Management, Industry Analysis, Marketing Management, and Organizational Behaviour.

The syllabus is essentially the same for both PGDBA and an MBA, but there are a few differences. A PGDBA syllabus is more flexible and subject to change as per the requirements of the industry. Meanwhile, the UGC decides the MBA syllabus on a long-term basis, so it does not change frequently. A PGDBA syllabus has a more practical and industry-oriented focus, while an MBA would have a more theoretical orientation.

The value of your degree or diploma would be based on your prior work experience, the quality of course content, the pedagogy, and the institute’s ranking. A PGDBA and an MBA are not equivalent since an MBA is a degree while the PG Course is a diploma. In terms of employability, significant employers do not discriminate. Both courses provide sufficient knowledge and skills to the candidates. The top hirers for PGDBA courses are Microsoft, SAS, SBI, Deloitte, TCS, IBM, Flipkart, Reliance, American Express, etc., for the position of Finance Managers, Marketing Managers, Production Managers, Teachers, Customer Service Managers, Project Managers, etc. Meanwhile, the top hirers for MBA are Amazon, HCL, Grofers, Zomato, etc.

Therefore, both courses have their pros and cons, and it is up to the candidate to choose which course is best suited for their future goals and capabilities.
