What is the purpose of postgraduate research?

Your postgraduate research is all about proving that you have the capacity to make an original contribution to your subject of study. Your study will inevitably fail if you are unable to demonstrate through your research findings that you have contributed something new to knowledge.

Your research must demonstrate these two key points in order to be successful:

  •  That you have located a significant issue or query that hasn’t been addressed or handled.
  •  You’ve found the solution to the issue or provided an answer.

Be Flexible in Your Thoughts. Avoid writing off ideas before you have determined their importance to avoid eliminating them too hastily. Expand upon your concepts and think broadly. Being imaginative and approaching your concepts from fresh, unexplored perspectives can enable you to identify a variety of leads that might be pursued. Don’t set any restrictions.

Don’t let others’ opinions sway you too much. Whatever you do, don’t let expectations from your teachers, colleagues, or academic department influence your decisions too much. You must select a research topic about which you are genuinely passionate. Since you are the one who must put in the most effort, be sure to concentrate on a subject that interests you.

Set attainable goals. Setting reasonable goals is essential to the success of your research. Don’t assume your research will instantly make you famous before it has even begun! It will be easier to meet any deadlines if you create a strategy for your research timetable that includes clear goals for each step of the route.

Management of time. Before starting your study, set aside a particular amount of time for each of the tasks you intend to complete. Everything needs to be taken into account, including fieldwork, conferences, meetings with instructors, and even personal commitments. It is up to you how much time you spend on each stage of your study, but a well-planned time schedule will keep you on track.

Make a preliminary analysis. An exploratory research study in the early phases of your project can be exactly what you need to try out some ideas and develop more conviction in what you want to do if you are not completely confident or have some nagging doubts about it. You might use this as an opportunity to gauge your level of interest in the subject. Postgraduate research.
